Punk Rock Social launched in 2005 with a run of chaotic, sweat-soaked shows at The Anarchy Library, a gritty biker bar in Downey, California. What started as a local band residency and showcase quickly took on a life of its own, evolving into a DIY punk event series known for carefully curated lineups and instantly recognizable gig posters.

We were inspired early on by the spirit of Kiss or Kill, the legendary weekly music night in Silver Lake, CA and the jaw-dropping lineups and visuals found in The Art of Modern Rock. We believed shows could be more than just a gig. They could be an event, a place where every punk and outcast feels instantly at home and among friends.

Punk Rock Social was built around a “Mix, Mingle, Mosh” atmosphere, pairing local legends and national touring acts along with the best local bands. It wasn’t just about booking bands. It was about building lineups that felt like events.

By 2007, we found our true home at Alex’s Bar in Long Beach, where Punk Rock Social ran as a monthly residency until December 2009. After that, we continued at Alex’s with one-off events through 2012 and expanded into special shows at venues including The Roxy, The Glass House, The Knitting Factory, and Safari Sam’s, running intermittently through 2016. In 2023, we brought Punk Rock Social back for three shows at Knitting Factory NoHo before the venue unexpectedly shut its doors.

Over the years, we hosted a long list of punk rock acts, including: Youth Brigade, D.O.A., Naked Raygun, Ben Weasel/Screeching Weasel (first L.A. show), Teenage Bottlerocket, The Muffs, The Groovie Ghoulies, The Queers, The Donnas, The Vibrators, Throw Rag, J.F.A., The Meatmen, The Dickies, Dr. Know, The Generators, Zero Boys, The Skulls, Dayglo Abortions, The Methadones, Lower Class Brats, The Dwarves, Channel 3, Angry Samoans, Betty Blowtorch, Donita Sparks, Jennifer Finch’s The Shocker, Texas Terri, D.I., and many more.

What set the event apart wasn’t just who played, but how it all came together. Each lineup had a flow. Each poster was a collectible. And every show felt like a one-night-only party for true believers.

Punk Rock Social shows are currently on hiatus. But now that we’re based in New York, the next chapter may be closer than you think. Stay tuned.
